Building a More Equitable Washington
Washington’s students and families are navigating housing and education systems that haven’t kept pace with today’s realities. With federal protections and resources at risk, state action is more important than ever. Our 2026 policy priorities focus on keeping students safely housed, connected to school, and supported by systems that work.
Our 2026 Priorities
1. Codify McKinney-Vento Protections
Pass state legislation that enshrines federal McKinney-Vento protections into Washington law.
Why it matters: Without these safeguards, students experiencing homelessness risk losing the educational stability they depend on.
2. Renew Funding for the Homeless Student Stability Education Program (HSSeP)
Extend the current $1.2M allocation into the 2026–2027 school year.
Why it matters: HSSeP helps schools identify students experiencing homelessness and connect them to housing supports—providing stability in a critical moment.
3. Protect Funding for Vital Safety Net Programs
Ensure continued state investment in the programs many families rely on as their last source of support.
Why it matters: These programs are essential to preventing deeper housing instability and family homelessness.
