Last week, under the bright Whidbey Island sun, Building Changes had the privilege of gathering with our Washington Youth & Families Fund (WYFF) grantees for a learning circle and site visit. These visits are more than just check-ins—they are opportunities to build community, share insights, and strengthen the collective impact of organizations dedicated to supporting youth and families across Washington.
Hosted by Pamoja Place, an organization fostering belonging for BIPOC individuals on Whidbey Island, we were joined by grantees from across the state, including Triumph Teen Life Center, New Americans Alliance for Policy and Research (NAAPR), and Mujeres in Action. Collectively, they are part of our latest cohort of grantee partners funded by WYFF to address the well-being and long-term stability of families experiencing homelessness.
Walking through Pamoja Place’s space, adorned with vibrant community-made artwork, set the tone for a day filled with connection and collaboration. Together, we explored the challenges and triumphs of the past year. A key concern raised was the impact of the potential federal funding freeze. Many grantees shared feelings of uncertainty, unsure of what the future holds for their communities. Silvia from Triumph Teen Life Center spoke about the ripple effects of funding shortages in Mount Vernon, where federal subsidies for local farmers directly impact food programs and food banks. These challenges ultimately put additional strain on state-funded programs, increasing the need for creative solutions and resource-sharing.
Despite these difficulties, the energy in the room remained hopeful. Each grantee brought forward stories of resilience—how they continue to empower teens, advocate for survivors, build prosperity for immigrant and refugee communities, and create safe, welcoming spaces for those in need.
Thank you to Pamoja Place for hosting and to all our WYFF grantees for their partnership and unwavering commitment to strengthen communities across Washington. These gatherings remind us that even in uncertain times, the power of collaboration and shared vision can lead the way forward.
